NORTH CEDAR NATURAL RESOURCES PROJECT
The North Cedar Natural Resource Project is a 16 acre area that has been developed into 5 distinct ecosystems. The area has walking trails that take the visitor from the NRP shelter located at the corner of Cedar Street and Woodlawn Avenue to the east edge, located at the corner of Western & Jaclyn Street.
The project features an outdoor learning classroom, a 5 acre tall grass prairie and a 1 acre savanna. A wetland area and upper and lower woodland space have 2 viewing benches. Another feature is the chimney swift tower constructed on the north edge of the tall grass prairie. Over 250 sapling trees have been planted in the project. Over 1,000 native Iowa species of various shrubs have also been planted on outside borders of the space.
The entire project is volunteer based with the space donated by of the City of Cedar Falls. The Black Hawk County Conservation Commission provided the project outline. All plantings were completed with the help of North Cedar School students and staff. The funding has been through private donations, service organization's efforts and grants. Labor has been provided by neighborhood volunteers and service organization's.
The project was created and is governed by the North Cedar Neighborhood Association a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Recently the Cedar Falls Public Art Committee approved a art piece entitled "The Nest" coming Spring of 2017. Click here for WCF Courier article.
