![]() CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL) – Some students in Eastern Iowa are adding to the landscape of a local neighborhood. 500 students in the Cedar Falls School District spent Thursday morning and afternoon planting 100 trees along Lone Tree Road. They were able to plant 10 different species. The idea for this project began last October. It was funded by the City of Cedar Falls and through grants and private donations, according to Jim Newcomb, the chairman of the North Cedar Natural Resource Project. The students were each put into groups of five, and then they were paired with a “tree mentor.” These volunteers helped the kids plant their trees and answered questions they had. Each group planted their tree, packed it with mulch, put a cage around it and watered it. The volunteers said they hope the kids take ownership of their trees. Each one is numbered so the children can come back to visit the tree they planted and watch it grow. “The best time to plant a forest is 20 years ago,” Newcomb said. “And, if you can’t do it then, the next best time is today. And, that’s really what we’ve done. We’ve incorporated this project with the kids so they can identify with the tree they put in.” Newcomb said it’s important the children learn how to help the environment. “We can’t take [trees] for granted. Trees are a great, healthy thing to put into the ground. I mean, it’s just a very powerful, powerful thing we can do for our environment,” he said. The organizers said they would like to put together similar projects in the future. ![]()
